Is there a reason you are interested in this besides the price?

I would say 'Nay'. After 80k miles it definitely starts squeeking and rattling. But then again: for that amount of money it's allowed to do that. Not a bad or unreliable drive if maintained properly. Buttons on steeringwheel are known to be troublesome so check them (and all electronics on the car!) out.

I think they look interesting and its within what i want to pay for running costs and in the class I've been looking at. Don't know a huge amount about them though.

I drove the 1.6 petrol. I think it's nothing special - apart from the fixed-centre wheel (which I really liked).

At one point I considered buying a VTS.

Thanks, I'll do a bit more research on them and might take a look at it. My car search is still pretty random at the moment so just checking out everything within what I can afford.

Fair enough, I've driven a renault megane from the same year and hated it so unsure whether theyll be in any way similar, being in the same class and both french.

You'll probably like it better then a Megane, these tend to age very bad (and were not as good when it comes to handling/engine in the first place), I wouldn't worry about similarity between those 2.

Might be worth a look then. I was expecting a few issues since every modern french car I've seen has aged pretty badly, that's why they fall into my price range more than focus' and such. My family has a few of them so I'm getting good at keeping them on the road anyways.

It's probably a sensible choice, a frugal and modern diesel in practical package that's not as boring as your average Japanese or GM box. And, not being from the UK myself, that price is crazy low.

I don't know that much about the first gen C4 though. My Peugeot 406c is absolutely rock solid reliable, but it's from the era directly before the C4. In my perception (and in reliability stats) PSA vehicles introduced in the ~2002-2011 era aren't that great.

I find the interior much better than the Megane's. Also, the HDI engines are much more reliable than Renault's dCi powerplants.

I think what really got me interested was that they claim it's had the timing belt done too, so many people defer doing that job. If they have receipts for that and the rest of the car is clean it should be a good buy. It is more interesting than the competition looks wise and I really like the interior. Suppose I'd better check out insurance prices, if they're no good it's no good anyways...

The megane interior was decent I thought, the seats were much better than a focus of the same year. The c4 does look more interesting inside though. It was the driving experience of the megane that bothered me, that and the terrible boot space. The megane was my mams and it broke a few times. Once there was the 3 day nightmare of trying to work out why it cut off below 4000 revs and had to be started at full throttle. A few wiring diagrams and some learning about variable valve timing lead me to the issue in the end. No mechanic we took it to could work it out. Thats was a petrol though.

That's a very good point. With slightly older cars proper maintenance is one of the most important factors.
